Capuchin Pre-Placement Socialization & Transition Program

Capuchins are highly intelligent, socially complex nonhuman primates. Our preparation program focuses on appropriate development and husbandry rather than attempting to make a capuchin behave like a domesticated animal.

Appropriate Weaning

Capuchins are placed only when they are appropriately weaned, independently eating a suitable diet and considered developmentally ready for transition.

Veterinary Examination

Each capuchin receives an appropriate veterinary assessment before placement. Relevant available health and veterinary information is supplied to the new caregiver.

Positive Socialization

Young capuchins receive gradual exposure to regular caregivers and routine activity using positive, controlled interaction without forcing unnecessary handling.

Carrier Conditioning

Capuchins are gradually introduced to an appropriate transport carrier to make veterinary visits and necessary transportation less stressful.

Routine Husbandry

They become familiar with predictable feeding schedules, routine visual checks, weighing, enclosure maintenance and other necessary husbandry procedures.

Climbing & Foraging Enrichment

Capuchins require substantial mental and physical stimulation. Appropriate climbing opportunities, manipulable objects, problem solving and foraging activities are incorporated into their routine.

What Comes With Your Capuchin?

Approved caregivers receive important information intended to help maintain continuity of care during the transition to a new environment.

  • Available veterinary and health documentation
  • Current feeding schedule and diet information
  • General husbandry instructions
  • Transition guidance for the new environment
  • Carrier-conditioning information
  • Current enrichment and behavioral routine information
  • General enclosure and environmental guidance
  • Relevant treatment information when applicable
  • Ongoing support for reasonable post-placement questions

Understanding Long-Term Capuchin Care

Prospective owners should understand the substantial commitment involved before applying for a capuchin.

Intelligence & Enrichment

Capuchins are highly intelligent and require substantial daily environmental enrichment, climbing opportunities, foraging and problem-solving activities.

Adult Strength & Behavior

Young capuchins become considerably stronger and more behaviorally complex as they mature. Early socialization does not eliminate species-typical adult behaviors.

Secure Housing

Long-term care requires secure, appropriately sized housing with sufficient vertical space, climbing structures and opportunities for safe exploration.

Specialized Veterinary Care

Prospective caregivers should identify a veterinarian experienced with nonhuman primates or appropriate exotic species before placement.

Social Needs

Capuchins are social primates. Their long-term behavioral and social needs should be carefully considered when planning their environment and daily care.

Long-Term Commitment

Caring for a capuchin is a substantial long-term responsibility. Prospective owners should plan for changing behavioral, housing and veterinary needs throughout the animal's life.

Responsible Capuchin Placement

Capuchins are non-domesticated primates with complex behavioral, nutritional, environmental and social needs. Appropriate socialization and husbandry preparation do not make a capuchin domesticated or guarantee predictable adult behavior.

Private possession, sale and transportation of nonhuman primates may be restricted or prohibited depending on federal, state and local requirements.

Prospective owners are responsible for confirming that possession of the species is lawful at their location and for obtaining any required permits, approvals or documentation. Premium Primates reserves the right to decline a placement when the proposed home, care arrangements or applicable legal requirements are unsuitable.

Capuchin Monkey FAQs

Important information for prospective owners considering Kylo, Ava or Lola.

Which capuchins are currently available?

Kylo, Ava and Lola are currently available. Gucci has already been reserved.

When are the available capuchins expected to be ready?

Kylo, Ava and Lola are expected to be ready next week. Final placement depends on continued health, appropriate development and individual readiness.

Can I reserve a capuchin for pickup?

Approved prospective owners may request a reservation for pickup. Reservation terms are provided in writing through the Reservation Contract before the reservation is finalized.

How much is the reservation deposit?

The suggested reservation deposit is $2,000 and is applied toward the final purchase price. The applicable refund and hold terms should be reviewed in the signed Reservation Contract.

Do you arrange delivery?

Appropriate delivery arrangements may be discussed for approved placements where ownership and transportation are legally permitted. Transportation must prioritize the animal's welfare and comply with applicable requirements.

Are your capuchins fully trained?

No. Capuchins are non-domesticated primates. Our preparation focuses on appropriate socialization, carrier conditioning, predictable husbandry routines and enrichment rather than claiming that an animal is fully trained or domesticated.

What records come with a capuchin?

Relevant available veterinary and health information pertaining to the individual is provided together with current feeding, husbandry and transition information.

Do capuchins require enrichment?

Yes. Capuchins are highly intelligent and require substantial mental and physical enrichment, including climbing, foraging, problem-solving and opportunities for appropriate exploration.

Will a socialized young capuchin remain tame as an adult?

Socialization can help an animal become accustomed to appropriate husbandry and caregivers, but it does not eliminate normal species-typical behaviors associated with maturity. Capuchins become stronger and behaviorally more complex as adults.

What if my selected capuchin is not ready next week?

Animal welfare takes priority over the expected placement date. If the individual is not medically or developmentally ready, placement should be postponed until appropriate readiness is confirmed.

Is capuchin ownership legal everywhere in the United States?

No. Private primate possession is regulated differently across jurisdictions. Prospective owners must verify all federal, state and local requirements that apply to their location before proceeding.
