Squirrel Monkey Pre-Placement Socialization & Transition Program

Squirrel monkeys are active, intelligent and highly social nonhuman primates. Our preparation program focuses on developmentally appropriate husbandry, predictable routines and helping reduce unnecessary stress during transition.

Appropriate Weaning

Each squirrel monkey is placed only when appropriately weaned, independently eating an appropriate diet and considered developmentally ready for transition.

Veterinary Examination

Each individual receives an appropriate veterinary assessment before placement. Relevant available health and veterinary documentation is supplied to the new caregiver.

Positive Socialization

Young squirrel monkeys are gradually exposed to regular caregivers and routine environmental activity through appropriate, controlled interaction.

Carrier Conditioning

Each monkey is gradually introduced to an appropriate carrier so that veterinary visits and necessary transportation can be less stressful.

Routine Husbandry

They become familiar with predictable feeding schedules, routine visual checks, weighing, enclosure maintenance and other necessary husbandry activities.

Climbing & Foraging Enrichment

Appropriate climbing opportunities, exploration, manipulable objects and foraging activities are incorporated into their routine to support physical and mental stimulation.

Understanding Long-Term Squirrel Monkey Care

Prospective owners should understand the specialized care and environmental needs involved before applying for a squirrel monkey.

Active Lifestyle

Squirrel monkeys are extremely active and require substantial space for climbing, movement, exploration and daily activity.

Social Needs

Squirrel monkeys are highly social primates. Their long-term social and behavioral requirements should be considered when planning their environment and care.

Secure Vertical Housing

Appropriate housing should provide secure containment, significant vertical space, climbing structures and opportunities for safe movement and exploration.

Daily Enrichment

Regular climbing, foraging, exploration and problem-solving opportunities are important for supporting behavioral well-being.

Specialized Veterinary Care

Prospective caregivers should identify a veterinarian experienced with nonhuman primates or appropriate exotic species before placement.

Non-Domesticated Behavior

Socialization can help an individual become accustomed to routine caregivers and husbandry, but squirrel monkeys remain non-domesticated primates with species-typical behaviors.

Responsible Squirrel Monkey Placement

Squirrel monkeys for sale are non-domesticated primates with complex social, behavioral, nutritional, environmental and veterinary requirements. Appropriate socialization and husbandry preparation do not make a squirrel monkey domesticated or guarantee predictable adult behavior.

Private possession, sale and transportation of nonhuman primates may be restricted or prohibited depending on federal, state and local requirements.

Prospective owners are responsible for confirming that possession of the species is lawful at their location and for obtaining any required permits, approvals or documentation. Premium Primates reserves the right to decline a placement when the proposed home, care arrangements or applicable legal requirements are unsuitable.
